The GHSA is pleased to announce the Georgia winners of two of the most prestigious awards sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Alpharetta High School’s Paul Coxwell is the 2016-17 Georgia winner of the "Spirit of Sports" Award, while Allatoona High School’s Alexis Watson is this year’s Georgia winner of the "Heart of the Arts" Award.
These two awards recognize students who have overcome adversity to reach great goals in their lives. The GHSA applauds these two worthy recipients and thanks the member schools who submitted all the other excellent nominations from which these winners were selected.
The NFHS has developed these programs to recognize worthy students in the Arts (Heart of the Arts) and in Sports (Spirit of Sports). These awards are not primarily to reward winners of games and or championships, but to recognize those students that make or have made an extraordinary effort to succeed, sometimes against a great deal of adversity.
The winners from each state are considered for the Sectional Award (there are eight and Georgia is in Section 3), and those nominees are then sent on to determine the NFHS recipient, who will be honored at the NFHS Summer Meeting.
The Spirit of Sports Award is in its 12th year and this is the fourth year for the Heart of the Arts Award.
