High School Students Need Adults to Listen and Recognize Their Needs, Struggles

Periodically, The NFHS Voice will be presented in the form of video. This week, NFHS CEO Karissa Niehoff shares about the first-ever NFHS National Student Advisory Council of 16 high school students who were invited to share their perspectives on participating in high school sports and performing arts. These students said they need adults – parents, coaches, teachers, administrators, state associations and the NFHS – to see them where they are and recognize the areas where they may be struggling. She said students need to know that their feelings and opinions matter, and that we are working with them to support their best interests.
Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff is in her sixth year as chief executive officer of the NFHS, the national leader and advocate for high school sports and performing arts programs based in Indianapolis. She is the first female to head the national leadership organization for high school athletics and performing arts activities and the sixth full-time chief executive of the NFHS. She previously was executive director of the Connecticut Association of Schools-Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference for seven years.
